Production and combustion of low and zero-carbon fuels

To meet the carbon neutrality target, one of the urgent needs is the energy sector to transition from being fossil-fuel reliant to embracing sustainable carbon-free solutions. Zero-carbon fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, biofuels and emerging low carbon fuels adaptable to current or new energy systems are envisaged to be important, especially for sector that cannot adopt electrification, such as metallurgy, gas turbine power generation, marine transport etc. Here, we examine clean production pathways for carbonless fuel, i.e. thermochemical conversion method such as pyrolysis, or electrochemistry method such as plasma-assisted catalytic conversion methods. Further, our lab is equipped with advanced laser diagnostics and burners to investigate clean combustion technologies.
